Uzbekistan and the UN to strengthen efforts against drugs and crime
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 February, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva met with Oliver Stolpe, Regional Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Pakistan, and Iran.
The meeting focused on cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNODC, particularly in combating drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, human trafficking, and terrorism, which has reached a new level.
Additionally, the parties discussed in detail the role of parliament in ensuring the priority of human rights and gender equality, creating decent working conditions, and fighting corruption and human trafficking in the region.
It was also noted during the talks that Uzbekistan has developed and strengthened its legislative framework for combating corruption, which has been recognized internationally. The country is also making progress in addressing human rights issues, forced labor, and labor migration.
Special attention was given to improving Uzbekistan’s position in international rankings and indices. The parties explored ways to enhance cooperation with the UNODC to achieve further positive results in this area.
Both sides agreed to closely collaborate on applying modern information technologies in crime prevention and law enforcement, as well as integrating these technologies into practical operations.
