Uzbekistan adopts measures to utilize mercury-containing lamps
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Government of Uzbekistan adopted measures on organization of collection and utilization of spent mercury-containing lamps.

In line with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan from 21 September, collection of spent mercury-containing lamps is carried out by organizations, which have permission to carry out sterilization (demercurization) and utilization of mercury-containing lamps from the State Nature Committee.

Collection of mercury-containing lamps is also conducted by producers of energy-saving lamps, including through sales points and through waste collection points.

The document said that collected mercury-containing lamps will be handed over to utilization organizations.

The resolution determined that legal entities, using mercury-containing lamps, will have to hand over used lamps only to utilization organizations.

The Government of Uzbekistan agreed with the proposal of the Uzeltekhsanoat Association and energy saving lamps producers on creation of mercury-containing lamps under their capacities till 1 January 2012.

Cabinet of Ministrov also approved the system on remuneration of population for return of used mercury-containing lamps. Population will be offered 5% discount at purchase of new lamps.

Energy saving lamps producers were recommended to direct resources, received from preferences within the Localization Programme, to cut prime cost of products and cover expenses related to collection and utilization of mercury-containing lamps.

The Government entrusted Uzeltekhsanoat, State Nature Committee in cooperation with energy saving lamps producers to submit proposals on creating new utilization capacities based on the volume of utilization of lamps.
