Economy 09/09/2009 Uzbek politician warns of possible accidents in Central Asia
Toktogul hydro power station
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Chairman of executive committee of Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan Boriy Alikhanov warned, in the article published at eco.uz, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan of possible accidents at their hydro power stations after accident at Russia’s Sayano-Shushens power station.

Accident was recorded on 17 August 2008 at the Sayano-Shushens power station, which was commissioned in 1978. This station produces 15% of electricity in Russia. The station was included to Guinness Book as the strongest power stations.

Boriy Alikhanov, former head of State Nature Protection Committee of Uzbekistan, said the accident Russia should serve as alarm for the Central Asia states as similar accidents can occur in the region, first of all at the Nurek hydro power station in Tajikistan and Toktogul hydro power station in Kyrgyz Republic.

The author said that both stations were constructed for storage of water to irrigate agriculture lands, but now Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are using these stations to produce energy. He added that this can be dangerous for the region.

Accidents at Nurek hydro power station, which can stores 10.5 billion cubic meters of water, and Toktogul hydro power station, capacity of which is 19.5 billion cubic meters of water, can result in catastrophic destruction and death of hundred thousand people.

Boriy Alikhanov said there is need to revise all technological chain of hydro power stations in Central Asia, first of all Nurek and Totogul hydro power stations. He said there is need to create new reliable mechanisms of preventing accidents and certificate employees, as well as ensure safety of the objects.

The Uzbek politician once more called to audit Kambarata hydro power stations and Rogun hydro power station in Tajikistan, which the governments of neighbouring states are planning to built. He reminded that the region is high seismologic zone and earthquake with 9-10 magnitude can demolish any large hydro power stations.
