Economy 29/09/2009 Uzbek official says gigantic hydro power installations can cause serious problems
Uzbekistan Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov said at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly the gigantic hydro power installations in regions can cause serious problems and possible risks of technological character, which could undermine fragile ecological balance.

As an example, Uzbek official recalled recent accident at the Sajano-Shushenskaya hydro power station in Russia. He said similar large hydro power stations operate today on water-flows of the largest transboundary Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers, providing water to the population of all countries of the region. He said this concerns Uzbekistan.

Norov said an active manipulation by the public opinion and attempts to attract wide-scale investments for building of another two new largest hydro power stations - Ragun on Amudarya river and Kambarata on Syrdarya river - are made today without taking into account that glaciers on Pamir and Tien Shan mountains - the basic source of water for these rivers - reduce from year to year.

He said the installations are constructed without thinking of possible tragic consequences that might occur in case of technological accidents at these installations, knowing that these territories are under seismicity measuring 9-10 and prone to strong earthquakes.

Uzbekistan will continue to insist that all planed construction of large hydro power stations in Central Asia must be implemented only after impartial expertise made by international experts under auspices of the UN in order to avoid possible catastrophic consequences. “Reevaluation of existing large hydro power stations on Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers that have been constructed in the Soviet period is also of urgent need,” Uzbek minister said.
