Uzbekistan 02/09/2008 Uzbek leader urges nation to learn country’s "true history"
In his remarks, broadcast on Uzbek TV in an unscheduled special programme on his visit to the memorial, Karimov said: "Every nation, which considers itself a nation and believes that it will have a great future, should certainly know its true history. The nation which does not know its history has no future, we say. It is true, if you do not know your true history, you will lose your way. Because, true history, above all, teaches us how to act, how to educate our children, whom to be friends and coexist with, as well as how to avoid repeating incidents that our people and history experienced and to learn lesson from them".

The Uzbek president also viewed the newly reconstructed museum of the victims of Stalin-era repression at the site, the TV said. After the ceremony, the president also visited the Independence Square to lay wreath at the monument of a happy mother, the programme added.

Video shows Karimov attending the commemorative ceremony; him viewing the museum; talking to officials; greeting officials in the Independence Square; laying wreath at and bowing to a monument.
