Uzbekistan 10/05/2007 Uzbek leader says "powerful" states realize Andijon accusations "fabricated"

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has said that "some large and powerful countries" have now understood that the accusations against Uzbekistan over the Andijon events of May 2005 were fabricated. Islam Karimov was speaking in an interview with journalists after laying a wreath at the monument of the Grieving Mother in Tashkent on 9 May.

"Some large and powerful countries, which have large powers, want a nation or a country in the other part of the world to obey them and carry out their policy. What will happen if this is not done? They will put various accusations -- which are becoming very common nowadays -- against you. So they say: ’You are against democracy. You do not protect human rights. You oppose certain journalists. You are like this, you are like that, so on and so forth..’ And if necessary, it is no bother for them to gather their supporters in a big place as if they are going to deliver a verdict against you. I can provide many examples from our history. For example, the Andijon events [of 13 May 2005], how many fabrications, how many lies and insults we have been exposed to. Time is the greatest and the most just judge. Now, after two years, everything is getting back normal. They realize themselves that all this was fabrications and the aim was to hold a colour revolution here, to overthrow the government, to make people worried, to set them against one another, and, if need be, insult our religion, so on and so forth."
