“I like to learn. Everyday is new to me, I try to enjoy and learn new things all the time,” he told the-afc.com. “There is no pie in the sky.”

It is not surprising, therefore, that Kovalenko is enjoying his time in Kuala Lumpur at the AFC Elite Men’s Referees Course.

“I am always happy to be involved in AFC’s courses and seminars. Every lesson is very useful for me, either practical or theoretical,” he said.

“The instructors help us to identify our mistakes and explain to us how the situation will be, when any uncertainties happen. I find it very useful when I officiate on the pitch.”

Among the tournaments that Kovalenko has officiated in are the 2008 AFC U18 Championship in Uzbekistan and the AFC Challenge Cup finals that same year.

The 34-year-old’s next assignment is the 2010 AFC Champions League play-off match this month, together with with Australia’s Ben Wilson and Malaysian Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh.

“I am honoured to be chosen for this match. I have set a high standard for myself for every match that I officiate in. I will do my best.”

Kovalenko, who works out five to six times a week, revealed that his ultimate dream is to one day officiate at the highest stage – the FIFA World Cup finals.

“I always harbour the hope of participating in the World Cup as a referee. As I am still young, I am optimistic that my dream will come true one day.”
