Uzbek FM: The UN must continue to play a central role in addressing 21st century challenges

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Saidov addressed the general debates of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

During his speech, he noted that the temperature in Central Asia is rising faster than the global average, which poses significant threats to the region’s food and energy security.

Saidov emphasized that in recent decades, per capita water resources in Central Asia have halved, complicating the water supply situation in the region. He also highlighted the continuing negative impact of the Aral Sea disaster on the ecosystems of all Central Asian countries. In this context, he urged international donors to intensify support for projects aimed at mitigating the destructive consequences of this disaster.

He reminded the assembly that the Aral Sea region has become the first ecological innovation and technology zone in the world, recognized by the UN. He stressed that Uzbekistan’s experience in addressing environmental issues could be beneficial to other countries facing similar challenges.

The head of the foreign ministry also pointed out that the global community is confronted with numerous challenges, including wars, conflicts, the climate crisis, worsening economic situations, rising social inequality, and technological divides. He called for the preservation and strengthening of multilateral cooperation mechanisms developed within the framework of the UN, underscoring the organization’s key role in addressing global issues.

“We are convinced that the UN must continue to play a central role in responding to the challenges of the 21st century,” Saidov declared. He also noted the importance of national efforts in solving global problems.

Saidov stated that sustainable development is the cornerstone of Uzbekistan’s state policy as defined by the country’s president. He highlighted that Uzbekistan has made significant progress in reducing poverty, improving the education system, transitioning to a green economy, and promoting gender equality in recent years.

He noted that the country’s GDP has more than doubled over the past few years, and the poverty rate has decreased to 11%. Empowering women and girls, Saidov pointed out, is one of Uzbekistan’s state policy priorities. He added that the country has achieved significant success in ensuring gender equality, becoming one of the leading nations in this area.

According to Saidov, Central Asia remains a key priority of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy, with a focus on integrating into global markets and reviving the Great Silk Road.

The minister also addressed the situation in Afghanistan, underscoring that this neighbor is an integral part of Central Asia. He expressed regret over the international community’s inability to find a solution to the complex situation in the country.

Bakhtiyor Saidov noted that Uzbekistan will continue to pursue a pragmatic policy towards Afghanistan, including contributing to the recovery of its economy and the development of transport and energy infrastructure.
