Uzbekistan Foreign Ministry said on 2 May that Umida Niyazova financed various unregistered NGOs and human rights organizations in Uzbekistan.

The ministry’s statement said on 1 May Sergili regional criminal court found guilty Umida Niyazova on three clauses of Criminal Code, including illegal border crossing, smuggling and preparation and spread of information, containing thread to public security and public order.

The release said the trial was open and representatives of Human Rights Watch and other NGOs participated in the work of trial.

The court sentenced Umida Niyazova to seven years in jail of general regime, the statement added.

The statement said the investigation revealed that Umida Niyazova financed unregistered NGOs and human rights organizations, working in Uzbekistan. It added that Niyazova received money from foreign embassies, accredited in Uzbekistan.

The Foreign Ministry said these facts, in according with international laws, can be considered as attempt to infringe into internal affairs of sovereign state.
