Economy 21/05/2007 Uzbek agricultural output up by 5.5% y-on-y in 1Q 2007

The total output of agricultural products in Uzbekistan made up 742.4 billion soums at current prices and increased by 5.5% in January-March 2007, according to official data of the State Statistics Committee.

The output of plant-growing made up 110.3 billion soums in total volume of agricultural production (104.4% to the level of 2006) and that of animal husbandry – 632.1 billion soums (105.8%). The share of output of plant growing was 14.8% in total volume of agricultural output and that of animal husbandry – 85.2%.

The share of the non-state sector in total volume of agricultural output was 99.9%.

Plant-growing

As of 1 April 2007, the total area under crops (including winter crops for yield of 2007) was 1.53 million hectares of which 1.34 million hectares – under wheat.

The area under spring crops was 159,300 hectares of which under grains – 18,400 hectares, industrial crops – 28,400 hectares (including 26,600 hectares of cotton), potatoes – 25,000 hectares, vegetables – 28,800 hectares, melons and gourds – 1,900 hectares, forage crops – 56,800 hectares.

Animal husbandry

As of 1 April 2007, farms of all types had about 7 million heads of cattle (including 2.98 million cows), 12.6 million heads of sheep and goats, 90,900 heads of pigs, 22 million heads of poultry.

As compared to January-March 2006 the population of cattle increased by 8.2% (cows – by 5.7%), sheep and goats - by 4.3%, pigs – by 12.2%, poultry – by 13.8%.

In the first quarter of the current year farms of all types produced 246,700 tonnes of meat in living weight (6.2% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year), 901,600 tonnes of milk (6.8%), 423.2 million eggs (12%).

Dekhkan farms are the main producers of animal husbandry products. Their share in total production of meat was 94.3%, milk – 96.5%, eggs – 52.5%, wool – 97.7%, Karakul pelts – 73.1%.

Private farms

As of 1 April 2007, the number of operating private farms was 207,900, the number of workers was about 1.1 million persons, and 67,900 of them were hired workers. As a result of transformation of unprofitable, low-profitable and unpromising agricultural cooperative farms (shirkats) in January-March of the current year the number of private farms increased by 18,700.

The total area of lands allotted to private farms made up 5.52 million hectares, on average 26.6 hectares per farm.

As of 1 April 2007, the sown area of private farms for yield of 2007 was 1.23 million hectares or increased by 13.2% as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. Out of them winter crops made up 1.17 million hectares, spring crops – 55,900 hectares (including 3,000 hectares of grains), industrial crops – 17,400 hectares (including 17,300 hectares of cotton), vegetables and melons – 6,900 hectares and forage crops –28,600 hectares.

Private farms had 390,100 heads of cattle (including 126,700 cows), 853,500 sheep and goats, 16,200 pigs, 871,400 heads of poultry as of 1 April 2007.

As compared to January-March 2006 the population of cattle increased by 14.3%, cows – by 14.9%, sheep and goats - by 53%, pigs by 22.7% and poultry - by 19.6%.
