Uzatom Explores Options for Connecting Large Nuclear Power Plant to National Energy System

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 8 August, during a review of developments in the field of nuclear energy, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed to further develop the project for constructing a large nuclear power plant. This was reported to the “Uzbekistan 24” TV channel by Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev, Director of the Agency for Atomic Energy.

According to him, a document has already been signed with the Russian state corporation Rosatom in this regard, based on which the possibilities for project implementation are being studied.

“This involves a comprehensive assessment of options for connecting the large plant to the national energy system. Our task is to build a more powerful power plant and implement modern energy infrastructure in the shortest possible time,” Akhmedkhadzhayev emphasized.

In June, Uzatom and Rosatom signed an agreement outlining the terms for the project to build a large nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.

The plan envisions the construction of two VVER-1000 power units, each with a capacity of 1 GW, with potential expansion to four units. A joint working group has been created to prepare the project, which will analyze key aspects, estimate construction costs, and formulate a final decision.

It is recalled that Uzbekistan and Russia signed an agreement on the construction of a nuclear power plant back in 2018. The agreement provided for the design, construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of a plant with two power units based on Russian water-water energetic reactors, each with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW.

In May 2024, the parties agreed to start with the implementation of a small nuclear power plant project. Amendments were made to the 2018 intergovernmental agreement: the clause on building a large plant remained, but a project for a small plant consisting of six reactors (later reduced to two) was added.

On 24–25 March 2025, Rosatom and Uzatom again raised the issue of prospects for creating a large nuclear power plant, including it in the agenda of joint negotiations.
