USAID assists Uzbekistan in consolidating emergency response on an example of highly pathogenic avian influenza
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Emergency Situations held two-day seminars for specialists of the national and oblast-level emergency response groups, the US Embassy in Uzbekistan said in a statement.

These seminars aim to design the integrated tasks and functions of emergency response groups on an example of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The seminars were organized in two rounds - first for national emergency response groups (25 participants) and then for oblast-level emergency response groups (25 participants).

The seminars, which will take place on 24-25 and 27-28 November 2009, focused on the practical aspects of HPAI surveillance, biosecurity, and outbreak response on oblast and rayon levels in case of an HPAI outbreak, the statement said.

Specialists discussed how to establish and enforce the control measures for the movement of animals and humans, as well as transport equipment and ensure laboratory functions in accordance with the national program of H5N1 HPAI prevention.

Avian Influenza preparedness is one of the many areas, supported by the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). USAID is one of the largest donor organizations in the Central Asia sponsored by one single country. In Uzbekistan, its programs help develop the economic sector, and support health care and social development.

USAID’s "STOP AI " program in Uzbekistan is implemented by Project HOPE.
