As part of these efforts, DTRA has funded the construction of two new Regional Diagnostic Laboratories - one in Andijan, and the other in Ferghana. The Regional Diagnostic Laboratories will help enhance Uzbekistan’s capability to detect and monitor disease outbreaks and help it to better protect public health.
The two Regional Diagnostic Laboratories were completed in December 2010 at a cost of approximately US$1.3 million. In addition to funding the construction of the laboratories, the US Government also provided new, modern equipment for the laboratories, and offered training courses on modern laboratory technology, laboratory safety and security, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and other topics to ensure highly trained laboratory personnel.
The Regional Diagnostic Laboratories will officially open on 25 March 2011. To mark this occasion, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies will take place at both the Andijan and Ferghana Regional Diagnostic Laboratories. Both US and Uzbek government officials are scheduled to take part in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies.
