Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 30 July, U.S. Ambassador Henick joined officials from the Uzbek State Customs Committee and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Office of Military Cooperation (OMC) to celebrate two significant milestones in the ongoing partnership between the United States and Uzbekistan. These initiatives underscore the shared commitment to enhancing border security, combating illicit trafficking, and fostering regional stability. 

The first achievement is the donation of advanced radiation detection equipment by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) program. The equipment, valued at approximately US$1 million, includes Radiation Portal Monitors (RPMs), Vehicle-Mounted Radiation Monitors, and Pedestrian Radiation Portal Monitors. These cutting-edge technologies will enable Uzbekistan’s customs officials to detect and deter the smuggling of radioactive materials at border crossings and customs checkpoints, strengthening the country’s capacity to address nuclear security threats. 

“This donation reflects the United States’ unwavering commitment to global security and nonproliferation,” said Ambassador Henick. “By equipping Uzbekistan with state-of-the-art tools, we are working together to prevent the misuse of nuclear materials and protect the safety of border personnel, the public, and the region as a whole.” 

The second milestone is the successful completion of a protective canopy at the “Gulbakhor” customs post. This project, requested by the Uzbek State Customs Committee and implemented by the Office of Military Cooperation’s (OMC) Counter-Narcotics Office, provides essential shelter for customs personnel, equipment, and vehicles. The canopy ensures uninterrupted customs operations, regardless of weather conditions, and supports Uzbekistan’s efforts to modernize its border infrastructure and combat narcotics trafficking. 

“These projects are a testament to the strength of the partnership between our two nations,” Ambassador Henick added. “They reflect our shared values and our commitment to addressing common challenges. Together, we are building a safer and more secure future.” 

The United States and Uzbekistan have enjoyed over 30 years of diplomatic and security cooperation. These initiatives further solidify the relationship between the two countries and demonstrate the United States’ dedication to supporting Uzbekistan’s border security and counter-narcotics efforts.
