Uzbekistan 04/05/2009 UNFPA takes part in the youth media festival in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 1 May 2009 UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund takes part in the “Ozod Yurt To’lqinlari” (Waves of a Free Country) Media Festival organized by the National Association of Electronic Mass Media (NAESMI), Public Fund for Electronic Mass Media Support and Development and National Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan.

This event was organized to award the mass media representatives who achieved good results in covering various important social issues through electronic media in 2008 and highlight the current successes and challenges in the sphere of media communications.

UNFPA was one of the agencies requested by the organizers to select the best news service covering important social issues among NAESMI members - TV and radio stations. By the opinion of the majority in the selection board, the “Hudud” information analytical TV Programme of NTT Network was considered as the winner in this particular nomination.

UNFPA was able to cover a lot of significant social matters through this information programme and appreciates the technical capacity and creativity of the staff members of this news service.

Mr. Matthew Kahane, UNFPA Representative a.i. in Uzbekistan, commented: “Using this chance, I would like to congratulate NAESMI on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the organization. We are thankful for the opportunity to cooperate with this media entity and have already successfully implemented a number of joint projects in the past. Our goal is to ensure that the media outlets participating in our projects realize the significance of covering such issues as reproductive health, healthy lifestyle, gender equality, HIV/AIDS prevention and achieving the Millennium Development Goals. We are also working to make sure that they receive all necessary information to develop good quality TV and programmes for healthy lifestyle promotion nation-wide.”
