Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 20 - 28 June 2009, UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund in Uzbekistan hosts a 9-day Y-PEER Advanced Training of Trainers for 25 participants representing Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

This advanced training workshop facilitated by a team of experts along with senior Y-PEER trainers, intends to build the capacity of selected master trainers, thus, expanding the cadre of highly skilled and trained peer education trainers able to design and deliver high quality peer education training programmes on adolescent and reproductive health in the region. The training also aims to establish national Y-PEER Focal Points.

“We expect that by the end of this advanced training activity, our peer education trainers will be able to better understand the concept of skills-based health education and related peer-led health education methodologies, develop interpersonal and group communication skills, acquire the skills to facilitate a range of interactive methodologies used in the training of peer educators, learn about Y-PEER Network, its structure, elements, tools and resources,” - commented Mr. Ulugbek Zaribbaev, UNFPA Programme Associate on Reproductive Health. “Ultimately, this will help us make a significant contribution in improving attitude of adolescents and young people towards healthy lifestyle principles.”

Peer-to-peer education implies the information sharing between well-trained and motivated young people and their peers (those similar to them in age and background). This approach helps to ensure, either in an organized or an informal way, that those peers have the optimal knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and skills to be responsible for and to protect their health and well-being. Peer education can happen in small groups or through individual contact and can take place in a variety of settings.
