Uzbekistan 08/11/2007 UNFPA co-sponsors conference on combating HIV/AIDS
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supports conducting the conference on the "Strategy on combating HIV/AIDS of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan" organized by the Medical Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan on 9–10 November.

The forum is also supported by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and World Health Organization (WHO).

The conference aims at reviewing the Ministry of Internal Affairs HIV/AIDS response programme for 2003–2006 and discussing the implementation plan of the Ministry on realization of the National Strategic Plan on countering HIV/AIDS for 2007–2011 while also identifying areas for strategic partnership with international organizations.

This event will bring together officials and experts on combating HIV/AIDS representing local and international organizations to discuss such issues as HIV/AIDS situation in the world, issues critical for Central Asian region in general and for Uzbekistan particularly, latest achievements in combating the virus, HIV prevention among adolescents and youth with risky behavior, and the role of existing country mechanisms in preventing HIV/AIDS.

Developing the strategy on Combating HIV/AIDS by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan will be in the main focus of the conference. Participants will also learn about the international guiding principles in preventing HIV/AIDS in penitentiary institutions and discuss the matters of HIV prevention at work place, ways of working with vulnerable groups and other important issues.

UNFPA representatives participating in the conference will deliver the presentation on the UNFPA strategy on HIV/AIDS prevention.
