UNFPA chief holds talks with Uzbek health minister
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, held a meeting with the Minister of Healthcare of Uzbekistan Anvar Alimov on 30 October 2012.

UzA reported that UNFPA chief Babatunde Osotimehin highly rated work on protection of maternity and childhood in Uzbekistan.

Babatunde Osotimehin said that cooperation between the and Uzbekistan is developing gradually. Uzbekistan pays great attention to implement programmes on strengthening health and well-being of population.

He noted that currently 99% of births take place in hospitals, which is high figure and great achievement of Uzbekistan in healthcare sector.

During the talks, the sides exchanged opinion on strengthening of reproductive health, development of harmonacilly developed youth, international cooperation in the area, including interaction with the UNFPA.

On the same day, Babatunde Osotimehin visited National Perinatal Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan to familiarize with its operations. The National Perinatal Center was established in 2002 to provide highly quality referral care to pregnant women, women in childbirth, women recently confined and newborns from all regions of Uzbekistan. With the support of UNFPA and other International agencies the center has adopted and implements international standards on Safe Motherhood and Childcare.
