UN Secretary-General to embark on tour of Central Asian countries

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 29 June, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will begin his visit to the countries of Central Asia, according to his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, at a briefing in New York.

Guterres will visit Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, reports UN News. He previously visited the region in 2017.

According to Dujarric, in each country, the UN Secretary-General will meet with heads of state and high-ranking government officials. He will also review projects aimed at combating climate change and meet with local activists.

The first stop of his tour will be Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.

On 4 July, Guterres will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana. In his address, he will emphasize the importance of reaffirming commitment to the principles of multilateralism enshrined in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He will also highlight the necessity of striving for peace.

Additionally, the UN Secretary-General will warn the international community that geopolitical differences are hindering the effective resolution of common issues, such as climate change.

António Guterres plans to return to New York on 7 July.
