UN discusses Russia’s proposal for a new security mechanism in the Persian Gulf

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An online meeting of the UN Security Council at the level of foreign ministers was held, at which the topic "Maintaining international peace and security: a comprehensive review of the situation in the Persian Gulf region" was discussed. The meeting was organized by Russia, the Middle East Monitor (UK) reported.

In July 2019, Russia, in a letter to the UN Secretary General, shared a proposal for a "Concept of Collective Security for the Gulf Region" with members of the Security Council and other UN members.

In the Russian proposal, terrorism and extremism in the region are identified as priorities that need to be resolved by creating a "consolidated counter-terrorism coalition and mobilizing public opinion in the Islamic world for this." It stresses the importance of "general respect for international law, the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions."

Moscow stressed that the regional security system should be universal and comprehensive, taking into account the interests of all regional parties and the importance of confidence-building measures for the success of this process.

As one of its long-term goals, Russia has called for the creation of an Organization for Security and Cooperation in the Persian Gulf. This body will include the countries of the region, as well as Russia, China, the USA, the EU, India and other interested parties as observers or associate members. However, in an online meeting, the US rejected the Russian proposal, saying it was useless unless Iran’s alleged violations of international law were stopped.

“Russian colleagues proposed to create a security structure for the Persian Gulf to ensure stability in the region,” the US Ambassador to the UN said. The ambassador noted that the solution is much simpler. The Security Council should simply muster the courage to call on Iran to responsibly fulfill its international obligations.
