UN approves resolution Initiated by Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 4 June 2024, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by Uzbekistan titled "Readiness of Central Asian Countries to Stand United and Cooperate for Effective Solutions to Drug-Related Issues."

More than 30 countries, including Azerbaijan, Algeria, Armenia, Bahrain, Belarus, China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, UAE, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, Senegal, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Japan, and others, co-sponsored this resolution.

The concept of the document is based on the speech of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. The resolution takes into account the provisions of Uzbekistan’s National Strategy for Combating Illicit Drug Trafficking and Abuse for 2024-2028.

The document emphasizes that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia is inseparably linked to combating illicit drug trafficking and abuse. Special attention is given to the positive changes in the region achieved through Uzbekistan’s new policies.

The resolution underscores the readiness of the regional countries for effective anti-drug cooperation within a global approach to the drug problem based on positive experiences of interaction.

The resolution calls for comprehensive measures to counter illicit trafficking of drugs and precursors, and to develop strategic initiatives and action plans. It also highlights the importance of expanding support from UN agencies, international financial institutions, and other interested parties for comprehensive solutions to drug-related problems in Central Asia.
