UCell concentrates its efforts on developing 3G network
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UCell, second largest mobile operator of Uzbekistan and subsidiary of the Swedish-Finnish telecom operator TeliaSonera, focuses its efforts on development of 3G network in Uzbekistan, UCell Director-General Oguz Memiguven said on Tuesday.

UCell chief said that currently the operator concentrates its efforts for development of 3G network. He said that the company has testing 4G network and added that the company plans to expand network in 2011-2012. But Memiguven said that the expansion of network will be in limited scale.

Oguz Memiguven underlined that Uzbekistan is one of pioneers in the world on 4G introduction. He said that 4G technology is new and needs significant improvement. UCell head added that the company should be sure that the network works in good level before it will offer 4G services.

He said that the company currently realized 40,000-50,000 3G-modems in the market of Uzbekistan and since the launch of this gadget 3G traffic of operator rose four times.

Currently UCell’s 3G network operates in Tashkent city and some other cities of Uzbekistan.

UCell started to introduce 3G network in Uzbekistan in 2008 and launched the network for commercial use in March 2009. In July 2010, the company commissioned 4G network in test mode. UCell has successfully tested its 4G LTE network in the centre of Tashkent. It involved streaming video, file uploads and downloads, and internet browsing, as well as calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The tests showed, that 4G network is 10 times faster than today's 3G networks. ZTE Corporation, one of the leaders in mobile and telecom equipment production, supplied equipment for UCell 4G network.

FE Coscom LLC was founded in 1996. As of June 2008, the company began rendering services of mobile communication under the UCell brand. The company's subscriber base exceeded 5 million at the end of 2009. Number of subscribers made up about 6 million at the end of third quarter of 2010.

UCell is part of TeliaSonera. TeliaSonera provides telecommunication services in the Nordic and Baltic countries, the emerging markets of Eurasia, including Russia and Turkey, and in Spain. TeliaSonera is now in 20 markets with close to 460 million inhabitants. The number of subscriptions in 2009 reached over 147.6 million. For the year 2009, TeliaSonera's net sales amounted to approximately US$14.3 billion and TeliaSonera had around 30,000 employees.
