Turkmen envoy calls to strengthen efforts in combating terrorism, drug trafficking
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Turkmenistan Permanent Representative to the United Nations Aksoltan Ataeva said at the meeting of the UN General Assembly’s First Committee that threats of international terrorism, drug trafficking, climate change are increasing and can significantly impact to global international security system.

She called to strengthen collective efforts in combating these threats and challenges. Ataeva said peace and security issues, including disarmament matters, are priorities of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy and the country is interested in strengthening of regional security mechanisms, assisting international community in supporting global security systems, prevention and neutralization of threats on rising of conflicts.

Turkmen envoy underlined rising geo-strategic and geopolitical importance of Central Asia. She said the region is connecting link of Europe and Asia and presents great interest in connection with large energy resources, transit of which is carried out to Europe and other countries.

Ataeva drew attention to issues of disarmament and decreasing weapon arsenals, first of all weapons of mass destruction. She noted that Turkmenistan and all Central Asian states undertake great attention to preserving peace in the region and preventing threats.

Recalling decision on creation of the Central Asian nuclear free zone, Ambassador said the region borders with two countries, which possess nuclear weapons. Ataeva states that the Turkmen delegation share concerns of Kazakhstan on security of nuclear weapons proliferation and their fall into hands of terrorism groups. She supported idea on creation of international bank of nuclear fuel under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and announcing 29 August as International Day of Peace and Free from Nuclear Weapon.

Turkmenistan Permanent Representative recalled initiative of Turkmen President, vowed at the 64th session of the UN Secretary-General, on organization of international conference on disarmament in Central Asia and Caspian region under aegis of the UN. Ataeva called to support this idea and start to implement it.

Ambassador said Turkmenistan is for stabilization of situation in Afghanistan and supports global fight against terrorism through assisting government of Afghanistan in achieving peace and accord in the country.

Ataeva said Turkmenistan helps Afghanistan through humanitarian aid, providing electricity, rehabilitation of economy, construction of social and humanitarian objects. She added that the Afghan problem cannot be solved only via military way and this issue should be in he agenda of the UN Security Council and General Assembly.
