Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The inauguration of the 47th U.S. President, Donald Trump, took place for the first time in 40 years at the Rotunda, the central hall of Congress, which accommodates around 1,000 people. The Republican took the oath to uphold the Constitution and serve his country.
"I, Donald John Trump, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God," he said, reciting the traditional oath, placing his left hand on a Bible held by his wife, Melania.
"Congratulations, Mr. President," said U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who administered the oath.
Trump swore on two Bibles, just as he did during his first inauguration in 2017. One of them was used by the 16th President Abraham Lincoln when he took the oath in 1861. The second Bible was a gift from Trump’s mother during his childhood.
Trump became the second U.S. president in history to return to office after a break. This achievement was previously accomplished only by Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th president from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897. Trump is now both the 45th and 47th president of the United States.
For the first time in history, foreign leaders attended the inauguration: Argentina’s President Javier Milei, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa. China was represented by Vice Premier Han Zheng. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya also attended. No Russian officials were present at Trump’s inauguration.
Following Trump’s swearing-in, the traditional 21-gun salute was fired. At the same time, 40-year-old Vice President James David Vance took the oath of office. This marked the beginning of Trump’s new four-year presidential term.
Unprecedented security measures were implemented in Washington, D.C., due to several assassination attempts on Trump’s life in July and September 2024, as well as terrorist attacks in Las Vegas (Nevada) and New Orleans (Louisiana) during the winter holidays.
