Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 15 August 2025, a summit took place in Anchorage, Alaska, between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting was held at the joint military base Elmendorf-Richardson and marked the first in-person contact between the leaders of the two countries for a long time.
The main topic of the talks was exploring ways to end the war in Ukraine.
The choice of Alaska as the summit location carried deep symbolism: its geographic proximity to Russia and historical ties to former Russian territory underscored the importance of bilateral relations.
The presidents met against a backdrop of military hardware, including F-22 fighter jets, highlighting the seriousness of the event.
However, despite the formal atmosphere, the meeting did not result in any concrete agreements.
The negotiations lasted about three hours in a closed session, followed by a joint press conference.
Trump emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, stating that “he would not be satisfied if at least partial progress is not achieved.” He also hinted at possible security guarantees for Ukraine in cooperation with European allies, though not within the framework of NATO.
Putin, in turn, noted that he was “ready to work on this” and expressed hope for achieving an understanding that would bring the parties closer to peace in Ukraine. However, neither side provided specific details or proposals for ending the conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump reported a successful conversation with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, as well as a subsequent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“An excellent and very productive day in Alaska! The meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin went very well,” he wrote on the social network Truth Social.
According to the White House, after meeting with Putin, Trump discussed the situation with Zelensky and European leaders, and all parties agreed that the best way to end the conflict in Ukraine is to reach a peace agreement rather than rely on a temporary ceasefire. Trump also announced that he will host Zelensky in the Oval Office on Monday.
The U.S. president indicated that the next meeting could take place in Moscow.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to meet with Trump and Putin to discuss a peace agreement but emphasized that peace must be genuine and respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, rallies in support of Ukraine were held in Anchorage, with participants calling for an end to Russian aggression and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The Alaska summit represented an important step toward establishing dialogue between the U.S. and Russia, but it did not produce concrete results in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. Security concerns, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and accountability for war crimes remain key obstacles to peace.
The future of negotiations will depend on the willingness of both sides to make compromises and take concrete steps toward de-escalation.
