Traditional Romanian spring holiday "Mărțișor" celebrated in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 14 March 2025, a vibrant cultural event was held in the capital of Uzbekistan, organized by the Embassy of Romania in Tashkent. The occasion was the traditional Romanian spring holiday "Mărțișor," symbolizing the arrival of warmth and the renewal of nature.
"Mărțișor" is not just a holiday but also a symbol, represented by a small ornament made of red and white threads. It is given to women and girls on the first day of spring as a wish for health, happiness, and well-being. This year, as in the previous one, the Embassy of Romania decided to share this tradition with the people of Tashkent by organizing a creative workshop at the Tashkent International School. Participants had the opportunity to create "mărțișors" and learn about the history of this celebration.
The event program also included performances by artists, who presented Romanian national dances, adding vibrant colors and atmosphere to the celebration.
In his speech, His Excellency Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, the Ambassador of Romania to Uzbekistan, noted that the celebration of "Mărțișor" in Tashkent has become an important event that strengthens cultural ties between Romania and Uzbekistan. "Uzbekistan is a valuable partner of Romania in Central Asia. In recent years, our bilateral relations have significantly strengthened in all fields, including culture. The traditions of 'Mărțișor' and 'Navruz' have much in common, bringing our peoples closer," the ambassador emphasized.
The event took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, uniting representatives of different cultures.
The tradition of "Mărțișor" was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2017. Under the name "Cultural Practices Associated with the 1st of March," this holiday became part of the world’s cultural heritage thanks to the efforts of Romania, the Republic of Moldova, the Republic of North Macedonia, and the Republic of Bulgaria.
"Mărțișor" is not only a symbol of spring but also a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing cultural traditions that unite peoples and strengthen international ties.
