Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the early presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.

Kazakh President also considers it necessary to reduce the mandate of the presidential term to one.

Early presidential elections in Kazakhstan will be held in autumn 2022, and parliamentary elections in the first half of 2023. This was stated on Thursday by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in a message to the people of the country.

"I propose to hold snap presidential elections this fall," he said. The head of state also proposed organizing early elections to the Majilis (lower house) of the parliament and maslikhats (local representative bodies) in the first half of next year.

In addition, Tokayev considers it necessary to reduce the mandate of the presidential term to one, it will be increased from five to seven years. The head of the republic noted that in mid-2023, a political reset of all state bodies will take place in Kazakhstan. "For me, the interests of the state are above all, so I am ready to go to early presidential elections, even despite the reduction of my own term of office," he explained.

On 19 March 2019, the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigned as head of state. The next day, the former head of the Senate (upper house of parliament) of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, took the oath and took office as president of the country. In Kazakhstan, on 9 June 2019, early presidential elections were held, in which Tokayev won, gaining 70.96% of the vote. Presidential elections in the republic were held every five years.

Following the 10 January 2021 elections to the Majilis (lower house of parliament), the ruling Nur Otan (later renamed Amanat) party received 71.09% of the vote, the People’s Party of Kazakhstan gained 9.10%, Ak Zhol ( "Shining Path") - 10.95%. The voter turnout was 63.25%. The next parliamentary elections were to be held in 2025.
