Three seeds knocked out of Tashkent Open
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Three seeds, Fourth seeded Anastisijia Sevastova, Fifth seeded Magdalena Rybarikova, and Seventh Seeded Evgeniya Rodina were upset on day 3 of the Tashkent Open WTA championships.

In the second round matches being played at the Olympic School Tennis courts here today Valeria Savinykh of Russia showed remarkable tenacity to upset fourth seeded and 66th ranked Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, while French woman and qualifier Victoria Larriere making her WTA Debut scored her first ever top 100 win registering a 6-4, 6-4 win over Slovakian fifth seeded Magdalena Rybarikova and making it to the quarterfinals.

Czech player Eva Birnerova continued the destruction of seeds upsetting seventh seeded and 83rd ranked Russian Evgenia Rodina 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1. Current holder and Sixth seeded Alla Kudryavtseva and top seed Ksenia Pervak both of Russia were the only seeds left in the event. Unseeded players Urszula Radwanska of Poland and former winner here Sorana Cirstea and Greek woman Eleni Daniildou were the other players to make the last eight stage of the singles event.

In a day of upsets the 20 year old Russian Valeria Savinyh of Russia scored a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over fourth seeded and 66th ranked Anastisijia Sevastova of Latvia in a 2 hour 07 minute tussle. Savinykh who has lost a few matches from winning positions, looked like getting into the same position once again. Having taken the first set after a break in the 12th game, Savinykh looked like going for the kill racing to a 3-1 lead in the second.

But the 66th ranked Sevastova broke Savinykh back in the 5th, 7th and the 9th games to win the second set and level scores in the third set. Savinykh coming back from small break looked more composed and broke in the very first game and once again raced to a 3-1 lead. Savinykh attacked Sevastova hitting some unbelievable winners on her forehands in the sixth game, after a tough game featuring 7 deuces Sevastova looked like repeating her effort in the second set, but Savinykh wrapped up the match in eight points after that and register a credible win and a first quarterfinal on the WTA circuit after a year.

"I have lost so many close matches from winning positions this year, and this match looked no different, I just took some time and said to myself that I’m not going to lose this match, and just went for winners. This match has given me back my lost confidence," said Savinykh who is currently based out of Spain.

Qualifier Victoria Larriere who won her first ever $50,000 event at Istanbul and making her debut at the WTA Tour event, showed tremendous determination to register her first top 100 win outhitting fifth seeded Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4, 6-4 in just 1 hour 37 minutes. The 20 year French women currently ranked 262 scored the decisive break in the 7th game of the first set and then held on to win the set 6-4.

Unnerved by the big occasion of playing her first ever WTA event, Victoria a Economics graduate broke in the 9th game of the second set playing solidly from the baseline and forcing Rybarikova a regular here into committing unforced errors, the rookie player then held on her 10th game ad registered the biggest win of her career.

"I just learnt today that you don’t have to play unbelievable tennis to win, but just play the game and consistently. Having coming through qualifiers here and playing my first ever WTA and firstever time I played a Top 100 player I was under some pressure, but as the match progressed I felt comfortable and went for my shots," said Larriere after the match.

Currently ranked 115 Czech Republic’s Eva Birnerova scored the third upset of the day scraping past seventh seeded Russian Evgeniya Rodina 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-1 in a 2 hour 22 minutes battle.

"It’s a great win for me, now I have won two matches in a row and every match has been a very good experience for me," said Binerova after the match. After trading breaks twice in the first set which forced a tiebreak Rodina brought out all her confidence to wrap the tiebreak 7-4 and go up one set.

Birnerova changed her strategy to offensive and decided to force pace and raced to a 5-2 lead, a minor laps of concentration saw Rodina break her in the 9th game after Birnerova served two double faults. But Birnerova looked determined belting out four winners in a row to break back and win the set and level scores. The former 59th ranked Birnerova played flawlessly breaking the seventh seeded Rodina in the 4th and the 6th games to make it to the last eight of the event.

Top seeded Ksenia Pervak had the easiest of day amongst seed as she stopped wildcard Sabina Sharipova 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hours and 22 minutes, while the other remaining seed and current champion Alla Kudryavtseva made a rough weather of her match scoring a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over country mate Vitalia Diatchenko in a 1 hour 51 minute match. Kudryavtseva served 5 aces in her match.

Local star Akgul Amanmuradova could not break her jinx against Ursula Radwanska of Poland. Akgul could not maintain the momentum after winning the first set 7-6(2) after coming back from 4-2 deficit. Radwanska who had earlier defeated Akgul in the same event in 2008, played percentage tennis breaking Akgul in the 2nd and 4th games to go up 5-2.

Egged by local fans Akgul clawed her way back breaking Radwanska in the 5th and 9th games to reduce the lead to 5-4, but could not hold on to her 10th service game and lost the set 4-6. The confident Radwanska kept the momentum keeping the tall and lanky Akgul nailed o the base line and commit unforced errors and the third set ended at 6-3 also ending hopes of Akgul’s victory here in match lasting 2 hour and 19 minutes.

Another unseeded player Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou scored a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Japan’s Misaki Doi in 1 hour and 52 minutes tussle.
