Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 17 January 2025, three more citizens of Uzbekistan (all men) passed away in Türkiye as a result of consuming counterfeit alcoholic beverages, the Uzbek General Consulate in Istanbul stated.

As of 18 January 2025, the total number of Uzbek citizens who have died due to alcohol poisoning has reached 17.

The General Consulate is completing the necessary documentation for repatriating the bodies of those who died from the counterfeit alcohol and is providing support to their families.

In addition, five citizens are still receiving treatment in intensive care units in Istanbul’s hospitals after being poisoned by fake alcohol. Consular staff regularly visits these citizens and maintains continuous contact with their relatives and hospital administration.

Diplomats are in constant communication with Istanbul’s administration, the health department, the forensic medical center, and law enforcement authorities regarding this case.

It was reported that some of the victims tried to treat themselves at home without seeking hospital care, citing the high cost of treatment in medical facilities. However, such decisions led to kidney failure, vision problems, and breathing difficulties.

In any case of poisoning symptoms, individuals are urged to immediately call emergency services by dialing the short number 112 and go to the "red zone" ("kırmızı alan") of the hospital. This service is free of charge.
