The US Congress officially approved the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The US Congress on Thursday, 7 January, officially approved Democrat Joe Biden as the next US president, which the politician is expected to enter on 20 January. Biden received over 270 Congressional electoral votes. This ensures that he will win the elections, since the approval of the electoral votes finally closes the constitutional possibilities for challenging the voting results. It is reported by DW.

The joint meeting of both houses of Congress, which began on 6 January, during which the election results in the Electoral College were to be approved, was interrupted due to riots on Capitol Hill, organized by thousands of supporters of the losing current US President Donald Trump.

Aggressive protesters stormed the Congress building, so police had to evacuate legislators. The riots reportedly killed at least four people, including one woman. The US National Guard was dispatched to restore order to the Capitol. Members of Congress were able to continue the meeting at approximately 20:00 local time (around midnight Moscow time).

Meanwhile, according to several reports, international media, as well as statements by individual lawmakers in Congress, more and more Republican lawmakers and members of the US government are thinking about removing Donald Trump from the post of head of state, without waiting for the inauguration of Joe Biden.
