The Russian Ethnographic Museum hosts an exhibition of traditional Uzbek embroidery and fabrics

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Until 31 December, the Russian Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg will host the exhibition "Silk threads of Uzbekistan: traditional embroideries and fabrics".

The exhibition for the first time demonstrates a significant part of the museum’s rich "Uzbek" collection; its exhibits date back to the last third of the 19th - early 20th centuries. Visitors can see traditional embroidered products that Uzbek families prepared for weddings and other celebrations: bedspreads and sheets for the bed of the newlyweds, curtains for wall niches, bedspreads for stacks of bedding and a baby cradle, wedding towels, prayer rugs.

The items presented at the exhibition belong to the embroidery traditions of different regions of Uzbekistan: Bukhara, Samarkand, Shakhrisabz, Karshi, Nurata, Jizzakh, Tashkent, Andijan, Namangan, Kokand. Embroideries from different areas differ in composition, colors and ornaments used by craftswomen.

In addition to embroidered products, the exhibition also features silk fabrics created by Uzbek masters of ornamentation using the “abrbandi” (ikat) technique.
