The retail trade turnover in January-May 2023 reached 108.65 trillion soums

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- As of 1 June 2023, the number of commercial enterprises operating in the retail sector of Uzbekistan reached 96 330 units, of which the number of operating large enterprises amounted to 324 units, and small enterprises and microfirms – 96 006. 

In particular, retail trade indicators include data collected on the basis of observations of organized and unorganized trade among individuals engaged in trade activities without the formation of a legal entity.

The retail trade turnover in January-May 2023 reached 108.65 trillion soums and increased by 7.2% compared to the same period in 2022, and the turnover of large enterprises amounted to 18.71 trillion soums (growth rate – 18.8%), and small businesses and private entrepreneurship – 89.94 trillion soums (growth rate – 5.1%), including unorganized trade amounted to 10.97 trillion soums (growth rate – 6.6%).

Compared with January-May 2022, significant growth rates in the period under review were noted in the city of Tashkent (+12.7%), Ferghana (+7.2%) and Tashkent (+6.4%) regions, in which there was an increase in the growth rate of retail trade.

Over the past five years (2019 - 2023), high growth rates of retail trade turnover were noted in 2021, while, if compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, this figure amounted to 10.6%

In January-May 2023, the growth rate of retail trade amounted to 7.2%.

In the structure of retail trade turnover, a significant share was noted in the city of Tashkent, which is 26.5%, or 28.79 trillion soums. The smallest share was fixed at the level of 1.7%, or 1.8 trillion soums, which was noted in Syrdarya region.

Compared to the corresponding period of 2022, in the period under review, an increase in growth rates in retail trade was noted in all regions.

The retail turnover of small businesses and private entrepreneurship, according to statistical calculations, in January-May 2023 amounted to 89.94 trillion soums and, compared to the same period in 2022, increased by 5.1%. The share of this sector in the republic in the retail trade turnover reached 82.8%.

In the structure of retail trade turnover, the volume of trade turnover of large enterprises increased by 18.8% and reached 18.71 trillion soums, which is 17.2% of its total volume.

The share of small business and private entrepreneurship, in comparison with other regions, was the largest in Surkhandarya (97.0%) and Kashkadarya (94.9%) regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan (95.4%). In the structure of retail trade turnover, the share of trade turnover of large enterprises amounted to 17.2% of total sales, their main share was observed in the city of Tashkent (40.3%), Samarkand (19.2%) and Tashkent (13.9%) regions.

The retail trade turnover per capita in the republic for January-May 2023 averaged 3 million soums (it increased by 5.0% compared to the same period in 2022).

The highest volume, in comparison with other regions, was recorded in the city of Tashkent (9.7 million soums), Navoi (3.63 million soums) and Tashkent (3.3 million soums) regions.

According to preliminary data from a survey of individuals, the turnover of unorganized trade in January-May 2023 amounted to 10.97 trillion soums and, compared to the same period in 2022, it increased by 6.6%. Including the turnover of trade in dehkan markets amounted to 5.4 trillion soums (an increase of 18.3%), the turnover of trade in livestock markets was recorded at 5.57 trillion soums (a decrease of 2.7%).

Unorganized trade turnover is also taken into account when forming indicators of domestic trade. This includes the volume of sales made by individuals in the dehkan (food) market, as well as in the markets for livestock, poultry and other animals. Unorganized trade includes agricultural products grown by individuals (farmers) on their own farms.

Dehkan (food) market – a property complex operating on a permanent or temporary basis in places designed to create the necessary conditions for the retail sale and purchase of a wide range of agricultural food products and products of its processing using shopping arcades, trading places and stationary retail outlets (including number of trade pavilions).

In January-May 2023, in all regions of the republic, a survey was conducted of individuals involved in the sale of agricultural products (grown in personal subsidiary plots), as a result of which the turnover of this type of trade amounted to 5.4 trillion soums. The high sale of fresh agricultural products reached 2.4 trillion soums.

In January-May 2023, in all regions of the republic, a survey was conducted of individuals involved in the sale of birds and livestock (kept in private farms), according to the results of which the turnover of this type of trade amounted to 5.57 trillion soums. The sale of livestock of different ages reached 4.46 trillion soums, sheep and goats – 903.2 billion soums, horses – 170.5 billion soums, birds – 27.4 billion soums.

As of 1 June 2023, the number of commercial enterprises operating in the field of public catering amounted to 24,725 units, of which the number of large operating enterprises amounted to 273 units, and the number of small enterprises and micro-firms reached 24,452.

In January-May 2023, the turnover of public catering enterprises amounted to 5.31 trillion soums and increased by 7.1% compared to the same period in 2022, of which 75.9% of the trade turnover falls on small businesses.

The turnover of wholesale and retail trade in motor vehicles and their accessories (except maintenance and repair of motor vehicles) in January-May 2023 amounted to 27.18 trillion soums and increased by 1.7% compared to the same period in 2022, as well as the turnover of large enterprises amounted to 11.26 trillion soums (– 2.5 %), and small business and private entrepreneurship – 15.92 trillion soums (growth rate – 4.9%).

The highest volume, compared with other regions, was recorded in the city of Tashkent (10.54 trillion soums), Khorezm (1.96 trillion soums) and Jizzakh (1.93 trillion soums) regions.

Wholesale turnover – the value of goods purchased on the side for the purpose of resale and actually shipped without modification to third-party organizations and individual entrepreneurs for use in business or their own use (processing), regardless of whether payment for these goods was made or not.

According to preliminary data, in January-May 2023, the volume of wholesale trade reached 98.06 trillion soums and, compared to the same period in 2022, increased by 10.9%.

The turnover of wholesale trade of small businesses, according to statistical calculations, amounted to 70.75 trillion soums and, compared to the corresponding period in 2022, increased by 30.1%. The share of this sector in the wholesale trade turnover in the republic amounted to 72.2%.

In January-May 2023, the highest growth rates of wholesale turnover of large enterprises, compared with January-May 2022, were observed in Syrdarya (3.3 times), Samarkand (2.1 times) and Kashkadarya (1.9 times) regions.

As of 1 June 2023, the number of commercial enterprises operating in the field of wholesale trade amounted to 45 764 units, of which the number of large operating enterprises was 349, small enterprises and microfirms – 45 415.
