The presentation of the report “Monitoring the progress of Uzbekistan on the path of “green” growth” took place

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 24 October 2023, the Ministry of Economy and Finance held an event to present the report “Monitoring Uzbekistan’s Progress towards Green Growth using the OECD Green Growth Indicators System".

The event was organized with the assistance of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Westminster University in Tashkent (WIUT), and the "green" hub at the Institute of Macroeconomic and Regional Studies. It was attended by representatives of the French Development Agency, the German International Cooperation Agency, the World Bank, the Chapter Zero Climate Change initiative, the Alkes Research research company, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, the Statistics Agency, representatives of the private sector and other civil society institutions.

At the beginning of the event, the Director of the Green Economy Development Department of the Ministry of Economy and Finance made an introductory speech. After that, the Deputy Director of the OECD Environment Dr. Mathilde Mesnard, and WIUT Rector Dr. Bahrom Mirkasimov expressed their opinion on the report.

The event presented basic information about the current state of the “green” transformation of Uzbekistan. The report for the first time uses a system of indicators of “green” growth for Uzbekistan to track the results of Uzbekistan in all major areas of “green growth".

During the presentation of the report and the web platform, Dr. Etenesh Asfaw, Senior Research Lead at  WIUT, spoke in detail about the OECD green growth indicators, revealing Uzbekistan’s progress towards a green economy. During the presentation, the following issues were considered:

Is Uzbekistan becoming more efficient in using natural resources and environmental services?

Is the natural asset base of Uzbekistan’s economy being maintained?

Does greening economic growth in Uzbekistan generate quality of life for people?

How does greening growth generate economic opportunities in Uzbekistan?

This work is the result of close cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Statistics Agency, Westminster International University in Tashkent, and the OECD.

At the end of the presentation, a panel discussion was held between the participants. The parties drew the main conclusions from the project, problems, and ways to promote the monitoring system of the green economy in Uzbekistan

Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. PP-436 of December 2, 2022, approved the Program and Action plan for the transition to a green economy, along with eight main indicators and targets for monitoring progress. The Ministry of Economy and Finance is charged with implementing and monitoring the "green economy" strategy.

In this regard, the report “Monitoring Uzbekistan’s Progress towards Green Growth using the OECD Green Growth Indicator System: the State of Affairs in 2023” is a key component of the Ministry’s efforts to monitor the green economy.
