The Institute of Economics and Peace at the University of Sydney presented the 8th Global Terrorism Index 2020

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The index contains databases of more than 170 thousand terrorist attacks for the period from 1970 to 2019.

When calculating the rating, four indicators were used: 1) the number of terrorist attacks; 2) the number of deaths as a result of terrorist actions; 3) the number of injuries inflicted by terrorists; 4) material damage from terrorist incidents.

This year, the authors have identified the following trends.

First, there have been minor changes in the terrorist threat rating of countries. The most dangerous countries in terms of terrorism, like last year, are named Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, India, etc.

Among the safest countries are the UAE, Turkmenistan, Belarus, Croatia, Cuba, Singapore, etc.

Uzbekistan again entered the category of countries with an insignificant level of terrorist threat. At the same time, Uzbekistan dropped by one position in the overall rating compared to 2018 (since Iceland and Bhutan were included in the category of the safest countries).

Secondly, the Taliban Movement (DT) leads the list of the most dangerous terrorist organizations. In 2019, more than 4.9 thousand people died at the hands of the Taliban. This is 18% less than a year earlier.

The power and influence of IS continued to decline, with the number of deaths attributed to the group dropping to 942 in 2019. up from 1,571 in the previous year. However, despite the decline in IS activity in the Middle East and North Africa, IS subsidiaries remain active around the world. 27 countries were attacked by IS or one of its affiliates.

Third, the number of victims of terrorist attacks worldwide has been declining for the fifth year in a row. In 2019, 13,826 people died as a result of terrorist attacks. This is 15.5% less than in 2018.The number of victims of terrorism in the world has decreased by 59% since 2014.

The situation has improved most notably in Afghanistan and Nigeria. This is due to the fact that the radical groups "Islamic State" (IS) and "Al-Shabab" were under strong pressure. At the same time, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only states in which the number of victims of terror still exceeds 1,000 people.

Fourthly, armed conflicts remain the main cause of terrorism. More than 96% of deaths from terrorism in 2019 occurred in countries already in conflict. The ten countries most affected by terrorism are involved in at least one-armed conflict.

In 2019, 63 countries reported at least one death as a result of a terrorist attack, and 17 countries recorded more than 100 deaths.

Fifth, the decrease in mortality was reflected in the decrease in the impact of terrorism. 103 countries reported an improvement in their performance in the Global Terrorism Index, compared with 35 countries that recorded a deterioration.

Attacks by right-wing extremists have sharply increased in recent years. In North America, Western Europe and Oceania, the number of such acts has increased by 250% since 2014. In 2019, 89 people were killed as a result of the actions of right-wing extremists.

At the same time, the economic damage from terrorism remains significant. Global economic damage from terrorism made up US$16.4 billion in 2019, which is 25% lower than in 2018. Terrorism has had the greatest economic impact on Afghanistan - the country loses 16.7% of its GDP annually.

Sixth, the factors associated with the increased level of terrorism. Experts emphasize that terrorism is associated with many socio-economic factors common to all countries. However, there are also differences between economically developed and developing countries.

In particular:

- in more economically developed countries, social lawlessness and discrimination create the basis for terrorism;

- in less economically developed countries, religious or ethnic divisions and corruption have the greatest impact on high levels of terrorism.

- high level of group complaints and weak rule of law correlate with terrorism in all countries.
