The first technologically advanced landfill is being built in Tashkent region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The first technologically advanced landfill is being built in Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. The cost of building a landfill in Akhangaran, intended for household waste from the population of Tashkent and Tashkent region, is US$16 million.

The project is being implemented in accordance with the resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 15 December 2020 “On measures to improve activities in the field of household and construction waste management in the city of Tashkent” with the participation of the Asian Development Bank.

The total area of the project is 30 hectares, while the landfill itself is 25 hectares.

According to Rafael Bekmullin, head of the Mahsustrans branch for reloading and disposal of waste, the landfill will operate using a completely new technology.

“The entire territory of the landfill will be covered with special material from geotextiles, geogrids and other geomaterials. The bottom of the landfill will be a continuous sealed basin, so that there will be no negative impact on groundwater and the atmosphere.

In addition to special materials, here we will lay pipes that will pump water out of the waste. We will also install pipes for pumping gas and methane, which in the future will make it possible to produce methane and produce electricity,” R. Bekmullin said.

The landfill is designed for 15-20 years and can accommodate about 20 million tons of garbage. Its construction will be completed by November this year.
