The BRICS Youth Energy Summit took place

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Alexey Likhachev, the General Director of Rosatom, spoke at the VI BRICS Youth Energy Summit.

This event brought together representatives from government agencies, businesses, industry associations, and business communities to discuss energy transition strategies. Likhachev delivered a lecture on the first day of the summit, which began on September 27 at the "Atom" museum at VDNH in Moscow. The summit was organized by the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and the BRICS Youth Energy Agency, with the support of Rosatom.

For the first time, delegates from 27 countries gathered at the summit, including representatives from 10 BRICS nations and participants from the youth energy community. Among the delegates was the youth team from Rosatom.

Likhachev’s lecture focused on the contribution of Russia and the Russian nuclear industry to the energy sector of BRICS countries. He noted, "The topics of sustainable development are among the global priorities, and we have incorporated them into Rosatom’s Strategy. The main task facing the global community in the energy transition process is to change the global energy balance in favor of low-carbon energy. Despite the efforts being made, hydrocarbons remain the dominant source of CO2 emissions. To preserve the planet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this ratio must change. Nuclear energy plays a key role in this process. We are actively developing it in Russia and abroad, collaborating with the IAEA and other international organizations, and engaging in educational activities in partner countries," he emphasized.

Tatiana Terentyeva, Deputy General Director for Human Resources at Rosatom, also addressed the summit participants, stating: "The future lies in clean and environmentally safe energy. Our partners from BRICS countries share this approach, integrating the development of nuclear technologies and small modular reactors into their energy transition strategies. This is impossible without training new specialists and educational programs in partner countries. We are actively working with youth in BRICS countries, conducting research on the skills needed for the energy transition, and have launched the ‘Obninsk Tech’ project to create a scientific and educational hub. It is up to you, the younger generation, to build a high-tech future for energy, and I am confident that our partnership will give the necessary momentum to this process," she noted.

The theme of the 2024 summit is "A Fair Energy Transition Through the Eyes of the New Generation." On the first day of the event, six panel discussions took place on topics such as fair energy transition, nuclear technologies, food systems in energy, "green" skills, mineral resource management, and climate change. The results of these discussions will be presented on the second day of the summit as part of Youth Day during the "Russian Energy Week 2024" in the form of the annual BRICS Youth Energy Forecast.
