The activities of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) in 2023 were discussed

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At the fifty-first plenary meeting of the Senate, the report of the Commissioner of the Oliy Majlis (ombudsman) on activities in 2023 was considered.

It was noted that in 2023 the Ombudsman had done some work to ensure effective parliamentary control over compliance with legislation on human rights, freedoms and legitimate interests in accordance with new constitutional provisions, improve national legislation and the national preventive mechanism, develop international cooperation, as well as increase legal awareness and citizens’ culture.

In particular, positive results were achieved thanks to the adoption of measures to prevent repeated requests. Thus, almost 2 billion soums were recovered in favor of citizens based on appeals to the Ombudsman.

During the discussions, it was emphasized that effective measures had been taken to eliminate identified violations of legislation in the field of human rights and freedoms, the number of propaganda materials through the media had increased, the study and prompt response to reports of cases of torture published in the media and the World Wide Web were especially positively assessed. .

At the same time, the senators made some proposals regarding the activities of the Ombudsman.

In particular, relevant tasks have been identified for the effective application of enforcement measures established by the Law, the study of appeals with an emphasis on the regions from which most appeals are received, increasing the effectiveness of monitoring visits in order to study the conditions created in places of detention of persons with limited freedom of movement, and the problems of persons contained therein, to improve the activities of regional representatives to prevent cases of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

The Senate adopted a corresponding resolution on this issue.
