Tashkent Metro to Introduce Distance-Based Fare System
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree aimed at improving the efficiency of the Tashkent Metro and developing the capital’s passenger transport system, the Ministry of Justice reported.
According to the document, daily passenger flow in the metro is planned to increase to 1.8 million people by 2030. The expansion plan also envisions extending the network to 79 stations and 103 kilometers of lines, while train intervals are expected to be reduced to 2–3 minutes. These measures are defined as key priorities for the long-term development of the underground transport system.
A separate set of reforms focuses on commercial and infrastructure modernization. By the end of 2028, vending machines and small retail outlets are planned to be installed at metro station entrances and in transfer corridors. A Park & Ride system will also be introduced near stations, offering fare discounts for parking users and enabling parking payments via metro tickets.
The decree also allows greater private sector participation in metro infrastructure. Entrepreneurs will be permitted to operate safe business activities in tunnels and stations under lease agreements awarded through auctions, aiming to increase the monetization of transport assets.
A major change will be the introduction of a new fare model. Ticket prices on the Tashkent Metro will depend on travel distance, meaning the number of stations passed. Discount schemes will be introduced for certain categories of citizens, maintaining the social orientation of the public transport system.
In addition, subscription-based ticketing options are planned, including daily, weekly, and monthly passes. The Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Tashkent city administration, and metro management will develop detailed proposals for implementation.
The new tariff system is expected to take effect on 1 January 2027, while specific rates will be developed within the next six months.
