The 9 exhibitions of contemporary art that make up the Biennale will feature photos, pictures and installations by Uzbek and international artists from Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the UAE, the USA and Uzbekistan.
Organized by the Fund Forum, the Academy of Arts and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Uzbekistan, the Biennale will also include a roundtable titled “Crisis or Transformation of Multiculturalism: the Biennale Space”.
This year`s Biennale has been given the slogan “Contemporary Art: Artist`s Space and Society”. Artists represent a particular society. Society cannot exist without art as it reflects its values and satisfies its esthetic needs.
Nonetheless, an artist consciously emphasizes his or her individuality, with some choosing to be detached or to live in solitude while at the same time needing societal recognition and probing into social aspects and problems through their creative endeavors.
This paradoxical state of affairs gives rise to questions on which the 6th Tashkent Biennale will seek to focus: artists` place and role in societal life, their positions and responsibilities. The dynamic processes in contemporary art have posed a need for a reassessment of these categories by the artistic community.
