Tashkent hosts seminar on preserving cultural heritage
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Committee on science, education, culture and sport of Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a seminar “Problems of preserving archeological heritage objects and their solution” on 24 June 2011.

Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs, Academy of Science, Uzbekmuseum Fund, regional museums, inspections on protection of cultural heritage and mass media participated at the event.

Participants noted that Uzbekistan carries out huge work to preserve cultural heritage objects, including archeological heritage. Administrations in places are responsible for execution of corresponding laws. Measures on preservation of tangible cultural heritage include temporary closing-down, repair, restoration works, as well as scientific and scientific-technical research. Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs of Uzbekistan carries out control over this.

Currently, there are 7,579 registered cultural heritage objects in Uzbekistan, of which 3,945 or 52.1% are archeological heritage. It was said that Uzbekistan carries out serious archeological researches. Uzbek leader Islam Karimov initiated celebration of the 2,750th anniversary of Samarkand city, 2,700th anniversary of Qarshi and Shakhrisabz, as well as 2,500th anniversary of Bukhara, Khiva and Termez.

MPs underlined that there are some shortages in use and protection of tangible cultural heritage. It was said that archeological monument Tuproqqala, which belongs to I-IV century B.C., is used for production of agriculture products. Katta Guldursin archeological object does not have special signs, which shows it creation date. In line with the legislation, the state bodies in places should control state of cultural heritage included to State Cadastre of intangible cultural heritage of List of intangible cultural heritage, but they are not doing it.

Currently, there are 90 museums in the system of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Affairs, which has over 217,000 exhibits, found during archeological digs. State Museum of Uzbekistan History has over 60,000 exhibits.

Participants underlined the special role of cultural heritage objects in upbringing harmonically developed generation. Uzbekistan created necessary legislative terms for the preservation of cultural objects, including Law “On protection and use of cultural heritage objects” and Law “On protection and use of architectural heritage objects”. However, there are problems in places related to protecting and using cultural heritage.

Participants adopted recommendations directed at eliminating existing shortages.
