Tashkent hosts roundtable on financial literacy of youth
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Tashkent State Economy University hosted a roundtable “Financial literacy of youth: experience and perspectives of development in Uzbekistan” on 30 April 2014.

The event was organized by a project of the European Union “Programme of financial education n Uzbekistan”, implemented by the Center for microfinancing (Poland) and National Association of Microfinancing institutes (Uzbekistan) in partnership with Tashkent State Economic University.

The roundtable was attended by representatives of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education and international organizations, heads of leading educational institutions, representatives of the academic community and teachers of the colleges and high schools.

Improving financial literacy of the population, including children and youth, identified as one of the priorities for further socio- economic development. In this regard, the country conducted systematic work, including activities in the framework of the State Program “The Year of a healthy children” in 2014, which is aimed at developing skills of the younger generation of financial decision, proper use of financial products, increase accountability in the management of personal finances.

The participants reviewed the results of the pilot test textbook “Fundamentals of Financial Literacy” in the Uzbek language, developed in close collaboration with leading universities and supported by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education within the European Union Project “Financial Education Program in Uzbekistan”.

At the roundtable, a draft of policy brief, which provides recommendations on integration of financial literacy into current education system, was presented.

During the discussion, it was highlighted that there is need for further work on the development and testing of advanced models and programmes, including educational technology aimed at improving the financial literacy of children and youth, modernization of the system of training of teachers in the field of economic and financial education and implementation of an effective model of inter-departmental coordination and cooperation.

Solving these problems will provide the necessary conditions for the formation of skills of responsible behavior of students in financial services and will contribute to the solution of many social and economic problems in the country, including the effective financial planning in households engaging educational loan, home finance, etc. Young people, in turn, are activators for receiving financial education, required for all categories of citizens, who are interested in improving their welfare.
