Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A driver of SUV hit crowd in Zhuhai, China and killed 35 people.
According to Reuters, the incident occurred at 7:48 p.m. local time. A small SUV drove into a large group of people exercising near a sports center. Police report that the suspect, a 62-year-old man, is currently in the hospital after injuring himself with a knife inside the vehicle.
A Reuters reporter on the scene noted that people have started leaving wreaths, lighting candles, and burning incense.
In a video confirmed by Reuters from the aftermath, at least 20 individuals can be seen lying on the ground.
Hundreds of rescuers from Zhuhai city and Guangdong province were deployed to provide emergency assistance, while more than 300 medical personnel from five hospitals worked around the clock to aid the injured.
The suspect was detained at the scene by police after attempting to flee. He inflicted serious neck injuries on himself with a knife.
Police stated that preliminary investigations revealed the incident was triggered by the man's discontent following a recent divorce.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping ordered all possible efforts to treat the injured and called for strict punishment for the perpetrator.
