Some 958 enterprises operate in fish industry of Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan has significant fund of freshwater reservoirs, which could be used in fish industry. Total area of natural water reservoirs makes up 800,000 hectares and artificial reservoirs – over 14,000 hectares.

According to specialists of fish fauna, Uzbekistan has over 100 types of fish, of which 25 types were naturalized in Aral Sea Basin, Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan said.

Currently, there are 958 enterprises and farms in fish industry of Uzbekistan, of which 256 farms were registered only in 2010. To carry out their activity, they received about 14,100 hectares of pond area and 424,500 hectares of natural reservoirs.

Analysis of fish production in natural and artificial water reservoirs of Uzbekistan for last years showed that the country produced 6,500 tonnes of fish in 2006, 9,400 tonnes in 2009. Uzbekistan expects fish production volume at 10,000 tonnes.

Ecologic movement of Uzbekistan said that over 4 billion soums of loans, large part of which were soft loans, were issued to fish farms to develop their activity.

The movement said that the Government of Uzbekistan pays special attention to development of fish industry and adopted programme on developing fish industry for 2009-2011, which includes introduction of new technologies into sector.

The Ecologic Movement said that it is possible to increase fish production in internal water reservoirs due to commodity production, aquaculture, etc.

Main direction of development of fish industry is to move from extensive technology to intensive forms. Serious attention in this is paid attention to improving quality of fish fauna and expanding list of breaded valuable types of fish.

The government of Uzbekistan also plans increase fish resources in natural and artificial water reservoirs, their rational use, and interrupted supply of fish to markets.

In 2009-2011, it is planned to improve water supply of fish enterprises in 2009-2011. The programme envisages to carry out channel dredging works for 796 hectares and cleaning 148 km of drainage and collector channels.

Currently, Uzbekistan carried out channel dredging works for 1036.2 hectares and cleaned 348.6 km of collector channels. Despite this, fish enterprises still have problems with water supply.
