Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) are concerned by the current situation in Pakistan, the secretary general of the regional security bloc said on Wednesday.

Over the past several weeks, Pakistani government forces have been carrying out a large-scale operation against the Taliban in the northwest of the country.

"We cannot but be worried by what is going in Pakistan, specifically in the Swat valley," Bolat Nurgaliyev said.

He added that the Pakistani government was doing all it could to bring the situation under control and that it had assured the international community there was need to worry about the country’s nuclear weapons.

Nurgaliyev also said Pakistan was interested in participating in the SCO’s anti-terrorism structure.

The SCO regional security group comprises Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Russia took over the presidency of the organization last August. Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan have observer status.
