Shakhram Giyasov secures early victory and dedicates fight to his daughter
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbek professional boxer Shakhram Giyasov (17–0, 10 KOs) confidently defended his status as the mandatory challenger for the WBA welterweight title (up to 66.7 kg), defeating Argentina’s Franco Maximiliano Ocampo (17–3, 8 KOs) by technical knockout in the fourth round. The bout took place in the early hours of April 13 in Atlantic City, USA.
From the outset, the fight was closely contested, with the Argentine trying to disrupt the rhythm through stance switches and counterattacks. However, at the end of the first round, Giyasov floored his opponent with a precise left hook.
In the second and third rounds, the Uzbek boxer fought more cautiously, focusing on body shots. The bout ended in the fourth round after a pinpoint right hook to the liver — Ocampo dropped to his knees and was unable to continue.
With this victory, Giyasov not only maintained his perfect professional record but also strengthened his position on the road to a world title shot. His next opponent is expected to be the winner of the upcoming fight between Jaron Ennis (33–0, 29 KOs) and Eimantas Stanionis (15–0, 9 KOs).
The victory carried deep personal significance. Just a month before the fight, Giyasov lost his two-year-old daughter to a rare brain disease. In an emotional interview with Ring Magazine, he said with tears in his eyes:
“It was incredibly hard. I lost my daughter. She’s watching me from heaven, praying for me. I promised her I’d become a world champion. And I will keep that promise. This fight was for her.”
Giyasov credited the win to a well-coordinated team effort and a meticulously structured training camp, with special emphasis on body shots and combinations.
“We worked hard, and it paid off. This victory is for my daughter. The next step is the world title,” Giyasov declared.
