Senate rejects amendments proposing ban on publication of photos and videos of law enforcement officials

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Senate of Uzbekistan has rejected a draft law that proposed penalties for publishing photos and videos of law enforcement activities aimed at discrediting or insulting the authorities.

Senators returned the document for revision. The proposed law sought to introduce a new Article 195-2 to the Code of Administrative Responsibility (CAR), which would impose fines of up to 50 sizes of basic estimated value or up to 15 days of arrest for such publications.

Tolibjon Madumarov, Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defense and Security, emphasized the need for further refinement of the law, particularly regarding the penalties and the ban on materials aimed at discrediting law enforcement.

A reconciliation commission has been established to address the Senate’s objections and work towards a unified version of the law.

The commission’s decisions will be made through separate votes by senators and deputies of the Legislative Chamber. If a majority of commission members from each chamber supports a decision, it will be considered approved.

Following the commission’s work, a report will be prepared, including the proposed amendments and additions to the draft law.
