Senate of Uzbekistan hosts event on gender equality
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan hosted a seminar titled “Issues of gender equality”, which was organized by the Committee on foreign political issues of Senate, Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan with UNDP project “Parliamentary Development Assistance”.

The event was dedicated to execution of the UN Convention on liquidation of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, which was ratified on 6 May 1995 by Uzbekistan, raising public-political and legal culture of women, their participation in state and public construction, in elections and state bodies’ governance, as well as gender equality in various spheres of life.

At the seminar, it was underlined that Uzbekistan gradually implements measures, directed at strengthening social-economic activity of women and raising their role in sustainable development of the society, improving women health and decreasing child mortality.

It was underlined that Uzbekistan pays great attention to expanding rights and opportunities of women in various areas, encourage equality of women and men. Employment of women in industry, education, healthcare, trade and services is increasing. The government supports women entrepreneurship. Uzbekistan also allocated 30% quota for women at nominating candidates at elections to legislative chamber.

It was underlined that Uzbek President Islam Karimov, speaking at the event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Constitutions of Uzbekistan, it is necessary to carry out systematic and regular work on protection of women and their participation of public-political and social-economic life of the country.

Senators, MPs, employees of parliament, representatives of Women’s Committee, ministries and departments, international organizations, experts and other participated at the event. The seminar was conducted with use of modern interactive methods of education and discussion.
