Uzbekistan 07/06/2007 Seminar discusses issues of juvenile justice development

A number of representatives from ministries, NGOs and UNICEF have participates in the seminar on juvenile justice held in Tashkent, UzA reported.

Juvenile justice is to regulate the relations that occur in the process of ensuring the rights and legal interests of juveniles in conflict with law, juvenile victims and witnesses in regard to juvenile justice system.

It is based on restorative justice, which emphasizes the need to give a chance to for young offenders to be re-educated and reintegrated into society. Also in restorative justice special focus is given to the needs of victims and safeguarding of their rights.

It is acknowledged that the Uzbek Government’s efforts bearing results in bringing the law in compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the establishment of courts with appropriately trained professional personnel.
