Uzbekistan 03/03/2008 SCO to intensify activities in Afghanistan - secretary general

"Given the high level of instability in Afghanistan, we intend to considerably intensify the activity of the SCO contact group for Afghanistan in order to solicit specific proposals from our Afghan partners on how to organize aid to that country," Nurgaliyev said on Friday.

Touching upon the main threats originating from Afghanistan, Nurgaliyev said that "SCO countries are mostly concerned about drug-trafficking, terrorism and extremism."

"One can confront these problems only when belts of counter-terror and anti-drug-trafficking security have been created," he said.

Answering the question of whether SCO states have plans to interact with NATO in dealing with the threats originating from Afghanistan, Nurgaliyev said: "The SCO has its own vision about the parameters of interaction with NATO, but we have not developed any specific agreements with NATO at this stage."

The SCO includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Mongolia, Iran, India and Pakistan have an observer status.
