Samarkand to host conference on preserving tangible and intangible heritage

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 26 August 2019, an international conference will be held in Samarkand on the theme “Preserving tangible and intangible heritage: current problems and strategies to solve them”.

The conference is held on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyeev under the auspices of UNESCO.

Goals and objectives of the conference are:

- promotion of the UNESCO principles for the protection of tangible cultural heritage and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage;

- exchange of experience of various countries in the preservation and popularization of the historical and cultural heritage at the present stage;

- improving the system of preserving the historical and cultural heritage at the present stage;

- introduction of new strategies and technologies in the preservation, conservation and restoration of historical and cultural heritage;

- introduction of innovative digital technologies in the field of the study, preservation and use of cultural heritage;

- determination of the main vectors in the activities of state and public organizations for the preservation of cultural heritage;

- development of guidelines for the use of cultural heritage sites in the development of the digital economy.

The conference will be attended by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay, the leadership of the World Heritage Center, members of the World Heritage Committee, culture ministers of a number of countries, ICOMOS experts, scientists, researchers of historical and cultural heritage of Central Asia, restorers, well-known directors of museums of foreign countries, inspectors of the Department cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Uzbekistan and others.

In addition, an important segment of the participants will be representatives of IT companies, government bodies in the field of culture and tourism, and international experts on the use of ICT in the field of preserving cultural heritage. Also, the heads of state authorities, representatives of the educational sphere, international analysts will be invited.

The conference will include a plenary session and breakout sessions in three thematic areas:

  • Cultural heritage and urban planning.
  • Legal and regulatory mechanisms in the preservation of world heritage.
  • Preservation of cultural heritage in education using ICT.

The conference will allow to consider topical issues in the field of protection of cultural monuments, study international experience, improve the national system for ensuring the preservation of historical and cultural heritage, identify the main vectors in the activities of state and public organizations in this area.

Following the results of the international conference, a Declaration will be adopted. For the first time, a large-scale event, Heritage Week, will be held at the conference in Uzbekistan.

The results of this conference will be of great importance not only for the Central Asian region, but in general, for the Asia-Pacific region, as well as other countries of the world.
